Bisi Belay Bath

  1. Rice     1½    cups
  2. Toor Dal     ½    cup
  3. Small  Brinjal     2    no.
  4. Fresh Carrot     1    no.
  5. Fresh Drumsticks     2    no.
  6. Vegetable marrow Small    1    piece
  7. Onion     2    nos.
  8. Turmeric Powder     1    pinch
  9. Red Chillies     6    no.
  10. Green Chillies     4    nos.
  11. Mustard Seeds     2    tsp
  12. Cashew Nuts     20    g
  13. Curry Leaves     1    stalk
  14. Coriander Leaves     1    stalk
  15. Tamarind     10    g
  16. Ghee     1    tbsp
  17. Fenugreek Seeds(Uluva)     1    tsp
  18. Coriander Seeds (Malli)     1    tsp
  19. Red Chillies     6    nos.
  20. Grated Coconut     1    cup
  21. Cardamom Seeds (Elakka)     4    no.
  22. Cloves (Kariampo)     4    no.
  23. Aniseed (Perinjeerakam)     ½    tsp
  24. Khus khus (Poppy Seeds)     1    tsp
  25. Cinnamon Pieces (Patta)     1    piece


  1. Heat 1 tsp of ghee (thuppa)in a pan and add all the spices except coconut and fry for 2 minutes.
  2. Then add coconut finally and fry for a minute. Cool it and grind it to a fine paste by adding water.
  3. Pressure cook the dal with turmeric powder set aside.
  4. Soak the tamarind in water and squeeze the juice. In a cooker or big vessel, add 10 cups of water(1:5 ratio).
  5. When it boils add the rice and the vegetables.When the rice is ¾ th cooked.
  6. Add the dal and salt.mix properly and add the ground paste, tamarind juice ,and ghee. Partly cover and cook for a few minutes in reduced flame.
  7. Heat oil in another pan and add the seasonings one by one. Now add this to the rice. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  8. Serve hot with and potato chips and ghee on top.
  9. This bisi belay bhath should be in a slightly semisolid consistency than the normal rice.
