  1. Toor Dal     ½    cup
  2. Small Onion / Shallot     1    cup
  3. Tomato -chopped    1    no.
  4. Tamarind Lemon size    1    no.
  5. Sambar Powder (available in market)     2    tsp
  6. Coriander Leaves -chopped    3    stalks
  7. Salt to taste     ½    tsp
  8. Oil     1    tbsp
  9. For Seasoning
    1. Mustard Seeds      ½    tsp
    2. Dry Red Chillies      2    no.
    3. Curry Leaves      1    stalks
    4. Oil      1    tsp


  1. Cook toor dal in a pressure cooker, adding enough water.
  2. Soak the tamarind in warm water and extract about 1 cup of pulp/juice.
  3. In a thick bottomed kadai add oil and saute the onions till they start to brown clour.
  4. Add the chopped tomato along with the tamarind juice and let it cook for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the cooked dal, sambhar powder and salt mix it well.
  6. Let it come to a boil, then simmer for another 5 minutes. Add the coriander leaves.
  7. Heat oil in a pan and allow mustard seeds to splutter.
  8. Add red chillies and curry leaves and fry for a minute.
  9. Add the seasoning to the sambar, mix well and serve hot.
