Puttu and Kadala Curry

  1. For the Puttu
    1. Rice Powder      1    Kg
    2. Coconut  grated    1    no.
    3. Water      200    ml
  2. For the Kadala Curry
    1. Black Chane      250    Kg
    2. Coconut  grated    1    cup
    3. Small Onion / Shallot      5    nos.
    4. Red Chillies  Powder    1    tsp
    5. Coriander Powder      2    tsp
    6. Curry Leaves      2    stalks
    7. Coconut Oil      2    tbsp
    8. Garlic      3    cloves
    9. Mustard Seeds      1    tsp
    10. Sliced Onion      1    nos.
    11. Garam Masala      1    tsp


  1. Mix salt with water and add the water little by little to the rice flour and mix it.
  2. It should not change to dough. It should be in a powdered form wet enough for steaming.
  3. Add 1 tbsp grated coconut in the puttu maker then add the rice flour till half, then add coconut. This is done till the top.
  4. Close the lid and steam for 5 minutes.
  5. Puttu is ready.
  6. Soak kadala overnight and pressure cook with salt, till done.
  7. Heat oil in a wok, add grated coconut, shallots, red chilly powder,coriander powder,garam masala and garlic.
  8. Fry till it becomes golden brown and grind it well.
  9. Heat oil in another pan add mustard seeds,allow it to splutter,add onion, fry till the onion turns brown.
  10. Add curry leaves and the grinded masala.Stir it well for few minutes.
  11. Then add kadala and cook it till the gravy thickens. Serve hot with puttu.
