  1. Red Gram (Thuvaram Parippu)     ½    cup
  2. Thick Tamarind Pulp    2    tbsp
  3. Tomatoes     2    nos.
  4. Sambar Powder (available in market)     2    tsp
  5. Asafoetida Powder    ½    tsp
  6. Curry Leaves     1    stalks
  7. Coriander Leaves -chopped fine    2    stalks
  8. Salt to taste    ½    tsp
  9. For Seasoning
    1. Mustard Seeds      ½    tsp
    2. Cumin Seeds      ¼    tsp
    3. Oil      2    tsp


  1. Cook the dhal with turmeric powder pressure cooker in 1 1/2 cups of water.
  2. In a deep pan boil the tamarind pulp with 1 1/2 cups of water,chopped tomato, sambhar powder, asafoetida powder, curry leaves and salt.
  3. Simmer over a medium flame for 7-8 minutes.
  4. Lightly mash the cooked tomato with a ladle, add the cooked dhal and 1 cup of water and continue to simmer.
  5. Heat the oil in a small frying pan.
  6. Splutter the mustard seeds and cumin seeds in the frying pan.
  7. Add the other chopped tomato, rest of the curry leaves and simmer over a low flame for 4-5 minutes.
  8. Remove from stove and garnish with finely chopped cioriander leaves.
  9. Serve rasam hot.
