  1. Chana Dal      ½    cup
  2. Turmeric Powder     ½    tsp
  3. Chopped Onion     1    cup
  4. Chopped Garlic     4    cloves
  5. Chopped Green Chillies     1    no.
  6. Minced Mutton     500    g
  7. Garam Masala Powder    1    tsp
  8. Red Chilli Powder     1    tsp
  9. Cumin Seeds Powder     ½    tsp
  10. Salt to taste    1    tsp
  11. Grated Coconut     ¼    cup
  12. Seasoning
    1. Oil      2    tbsp
    2. Bay leaves      1    no.
    3. Cinnamon Pieces (Patta)      2    piece
    4. Cumin Seeds      ½    tsp
    5. Fennel Seeds(Perumjeerakam)      ½    tsp


  1. Wash the dal and drain. Cook the dal with 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder and 2 cups of water, till tender, but not creamy.Drain any remaining water and set aside.
  2. For the tempering, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot but not smoking , add the bayleaf and cinnamon.After a few seconds, add the cumin and fennel seeds.
  3. Immediately add the onions, garlic, green chilli and 3/4 tsp of turmeric powder. Cook stirring for about a minute, till onions are soft.
  4. Add the meat and pan-fry for about 3 minutes, till browned, stirring and breaking up any lumps that are formed.
  5. Mix in the remaining spice powders.Cover and cook for a couple of minutes. Stir in salt, cover and cook for another 5 minutes.
  6. Blend in the cooked dal.Cover and cook for a couple of minutes longer. Add coconut and stir well.
  7. Serve hot.
