  1. Ayala (Mackerel)     8    nos.
  2. Coconut     4    cup
  3. Small  Onion     2    nos.
  4. Green Chillies     4    nos.
  5. Big Tomatoes     2    nos.
  6. Garlic     4    cloves
  7. Chilli Powder     3    tsp
  8. Turmeric Powder     ½    tsp
  9. Aniseed (Perinjeerakam)     1    tsp
  10. Mustard Seeds     ¼    tsp
  11. Fenugreek Seeds(Uluva)     ½    tsp
  12. Oil     2    tbsp
  13. Curry Leaves     2    stalk


  1. Clean and remove the heads of the mackerel and cut in to two. Wash well. Slice the onion, chillies and tomatoes.
  2. Grind coconut to a coarse paste with aniseed and garlic.
  3. Heat oil. Add mustard.When it starts to crackle add fenugreek, onion and green chillies.
  4. Fry till the onion is lightly browned. Add the tomatoes, chilli powder and turmeric powder.
  5. Stir well and add 1 cup water and salt. Cook for few minutes.
  6. Add fish and cook till the fish is done.
  7. Mix ground coconut in half cup water and add to the fish. Add the curry leaves.
  8. Simmer till the gravy is thick. Remove from the fire.
  9. Serve it hot.
