  1. Toor Dal     1    cup
  2. Turmeric Powder     ½    tsp
  3. Small Onion / Shallot     1    cup
  4. Green Chillies     10    nos.
  5. To Marinate     2    no.
  6. Mixed Vegetables     2    cup
  7. Grated Coconut     1    cup
  8. Coriander Powder     2    tsp
  9. Tamarind Juice Lemon size    1    no.
  10. Asafoetida Powder    ¼    tsp
  11. Fenugreek Seeds(Uluva) Powder    ½    tsp
  12. Mustard Seeds     ½    tsp
  13. Cumin Seeds     ¼    tsp
  14. Small Onion / Shallot     3    nos.
  15. Dried Red Chilli     3    no.
  16. Curry Leaves     2    stalks
  17. Coconut Oil     2    tbsp
  18. Salt to taste     ½    tsp
  19. Coriander Leaves -chopped    2    stalks


  1. Pressure cook toor dal with pinch of turmeric powder and curry leaves.
  2. Soak tamarind in warm water and extract juice from it.
  3. Heat oil in a pan, add chopped shallots and green chillies, fry for few minutes. Then add chopped tomato, close the pan and allow it to cook till the tomatoes are soft. Keep aside.
  4. Mix it with cooked dal and vegetables. Add salt and water, stir well and bring to boil in medium flame.
  5. Meanwhile roast grated coconut with curry leaves till it becomes brown, keep the flame in medium. Add coriander powder and grind it to fine paste.
  6. When the vegetables are cooked add tamarind juice, a pinch asafoetida powder and fenugreek seeds powder. Stir well boil for 5 minutes.
  7. Finally add the coconut mixture, boil it in low flame till the gravy thickens.
  8. Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds. Then add chopped shallots, dry red chillies, cumin seeds and curry leaves. Pour it to the sambar.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
