  1. Basmati Rice     2    cup
  2. Cooked Rice     ½    cup
  3. Cardamom(Elakka) Powder     ½    tsp
  4. Baking soda     1    pinch
  5. Salt to taste     1    pinch
  6. Jaggery(Sarkkara)     250    g
  7. Small Onion / Shallot     ½    cup
  8. Coconut sliced    ½    cup
  9. Coconut Oil     ½    cup


  1. Wash the soak rice for 2-3 hours.Grind it along with cooked rice and 1/4 cup of water.
  2. Add cardamom powder salt and baking soda and keep it aside.
  3. Melt the jaggery with 1/2 cup of water. Strain and add this to rice batter.
  4. Melted jaggery should be very hot while adding to the batter. Immediately mix fast otherwise the chances forming rice lumps is more. keep this batter for 1 hr.
  5. Take a small pressure cooker for this measurement. Chop shallots and coconuts into pieces.
  6. In the pressure cooker add coconut oil and the coconut slices till it become golden. Do the same with shallot also.Set aside some of the fried coconut pieces and shallots to garnish on top.
  7. Kalthappam is ready.Serve it hot.
