  1. Tomatoes     ½    Kg
  2. Cloves (Kariampo)     2    nos.
  3. Cinnamon Pieces (Patta)     1    piece
  4. Bay leaves     1    nos.
  5. Curry Leaves     1    stalks
  6. Onion -chopped    2    nos.
  7. Ginger Garlic Paste     1    tsp
  8. Turmeric Powder     ¼    tsp
  9. Red Chilli Powder     ¼    tsp
  10. Salt to taste     ½    tsp
  11. Grind to a fine paste
    1. Coconut  grated    ½    cup
    2. Fennel Seeds(Perumjeerakam)      ½    tsp
    3. Green Chillies      5    no.
    4. Khus khus (Poppy Seeds)      ½    tsp


  1. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed cooking vessel. Add cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaf and curry leaves and allow to sizzle for a few minutes.
  2. Add the ginger garlic paste and saute for 5 minutes. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes and saute for 10 minutes on low to medium flame with lid.
  4. Add the ground paste along with a cup of water and bring to a boil. Reduce flame and simmer till the gravy thickens.
  5. Serve hot with dosa or chapati.
