  1. Vanpayar     1    cup
  2. Coconut Oil     2    tbsp
  3. Mustard Seeds     ½    tsp
  4. Curry Leaves     1    stalks
  5. Turmeric Powder     ¼    tsp
  6. Coconut Cut in to small pieces    ½    tsp
  7. Ginger  Finely Chopped     ½    tsp
  8. Garlic sliced    2    tbsp
  9. Small Onion / Shallot sliced    10    nos.
  10. Pepper Powder     ¼    tsp
  11. Crushed Dried Red Chilli     1    tsp
  12. Salt to taste     ½    tsp


  1. Soak the vanpayar in water over night. Wash the vanpayar in a medium vessel or a pressure cooker for 1-2 whistles adding enough water, salt and a few curry leaves. If there is excess water strain. Set aside.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan at medium heat. Splutter mustard seed and add curry leaves, coconut flakes and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder. Stir for a minute and add ginger, garlic and small onions.
  3. Add a pinch of salt and saute for a couple of minute. Add crushed chilly flakes and saute for a minute. Add cooked vanpayar and mix well. Stir fry for a minute or two until dry.
  4. Finally add cooked 1/2 tsp pepper powder and mix well. Serve with rice and other side dishes.
