Gooseberry Raita

  1. Brined gooseberries / uppilitta nellikka -chopped    5    no.
  2. Yoghurt     1    cup
  3. Salt to taste     ½    tsp
  4. For Seasoning
    1. Coconut Oil      2    tsp
    2. Mustard Seeds      ½    tsp
    3. Dry Red Chillies      3    nos.
    4. Small Onion / Shallot  sliced    2    nos.
    5. Garlic      1    nos.
    6. Green Chillies  sliced    2    nos.
    7. Ginger   Finely Chopped     ½    tsp
    8. Chilli Powder      ¼    tsp
    9. Curry Leaves      1    stalks


  1. In a small bowl, combine chopped gooseberries, yoghurt and salt , to taste.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a small pan splutter mustard seeds and fry dried red chillies until brown.
  3. Next fry sliced shallots, garlic and green chilly. When shallots turns golden, add ginger and curry leaves.
  4. Stir for 30 seconds and then add chilly powder. Give it a stir and immediately pour this seasoning over the raita.
  5. Cover with a lid for 10 minutes. Mix well. set aside for 30 minutes.
  6. Serve with rice and other side dishes.
