  1. Rice     1    cup
  2. Jaggery(Sarkkara)     4    nos.
  3. Cooked Rice     ¼    cup
  4. Grated Coconut     ¼    cup
  5. Cumin Seeds     ¼    tsp
  6. Cardamom Seeds (Elakka)     2    nos.
  7. Small Onion / Shallot -chopped    10    nos.
  8. Coconut pieces     5    tbsp
  9. Baking soda     ¼    tsp
  10. Ghee     1    tbsp
  11. Coconut Oil     4    tbsp
  12. Salt to taste     ½    tsp


  1. Soak rice for 5-6 hrs in water. Melt jaggery by adding 1 cup of water.
  2. Grind rice with grated coconut, cumin seeds, cardamom pods, baking soda, soda, salt and cooked rice by adding enough amount of melted jaggery water.
  3. Pour some more jaggery and make it to a medium thickens batter. Allow the make batter to rest for 1 hrs.
  4. In a thick sauce pan pour 4 tbsp of coconut oil. Fry coconut pieces and shallot, keep it aside.
  5. Add half portion of fried coconut pieces and shallots to the batter we already prepared, gently warm the mixture by stirring continuously.
  6. Pour 1 tbsp of ghee in remaining oil, then pour the batter, cover it and allow it to cook.
  7. Cook it in a high flame for 5 minutes then open the lid and spread remaining fried coconut pieces and onion over it in a low flame for 30 minutes.
  8. Insert a toothpick/knife to check whether it is cooked or not. Allow it cool and cut it to desired shape.
  9. Now our yummy and tasty kalathappam is ready to serve.
