  1. Boneless Chicken     ½    Kg
  2. Pepper Powder     ¼    tsp
  3. Turmeric Powder     ¼    tsp
  4. Salt to taste     ½    tsp
  5. Water     ¼    cup
  6. Coconut Oil     3    tbsp
  7. Mustard Seeds     ½    tsp
  8. Broken Dried Red Chilli     2    nos.
  9. Onion -chopped    1    cup
  10. Small Onion / Shallot sliced    ½    cups
  11. Green Chillies     5    nos.
  12. Curry Leaves     1    stalks
  13. Turmeric Powder     ¼    tsp
  14. Chilli Powder     ½    tsp
  15. Coriander Powder     1    tsp
  16. Garam Masala Powder    ½    tsp
  17. Black peppercorns Crushed    1    tsp
  18. Salt to taste     ½    tsp


  1. Cook the chicken pieces adding the other ingredients numbered 1 to 5. Cook covered until done or for 1 whistle.
  2. Drain excess water and tear the chicken into small pieces. Discard the bones. Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat.
  3. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dried red chillies. Add onion, pearl onion, little salt, green chillies and curry leaves.
  4. Sauté until light golden. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder. Sauté until raw smell leaves.
  5. Add grated coconut and mix well. Cook for a minute. Add chicken pieces, gram masala powder and crushed pepper corns. Cook for 10 minutes until dry.
  6. Taste check and add masala powder, few curry leaves and black pepper powder, if required. Add a tsp of coconut oil. Mix well and switch off.
  7. Chicken Ulli thoran is ready. Serve it hot.
