Chicken Coconut Ularthiyathu

  1. Chicken     2    Kg
  2. Turmeric Powder     ½    tsp
  3. Coriander Powder     3    tsp
  4. Chilli Powder     3    tsp
  5. Garam Masala Powder    1    tsp
  6. Salt to taste     ½    tsp
  7. Grated Coconut     2    cup
  8. Onion sliced    2    nos.
  9. Ginger -chopped    1    pieces
  10. Garlic -chopped    10    cloves
  11. Turmeric Powder     ¼    tsp
  12. Chilli Powder     1    tsp
  13. Coriander Powder     3    tsp
  14. Fennel Seeds(Perumjeerakam)     1    tsp
  15. Black peppercorns     ½    tsp
  16. Masala Powder    ½    tsp
  17. Salt to taste     ½    tsp
  18. Curry Leaves     1    stalks
  19. Coconut Oil     2    tbsp


  1. Marinate chicken with all the ingredients numbered 1 to 6. Set aside for at least 30 minutes or overnight in the refrigerator, take it out 30 minutes before cooking.
  2. Combine grated coconut with all the other ingredients. Transfer this to the small jar of a blender and pulse for 2 times. It should be coarse in texture.
  3. Add this to the chicken and combine well. Heat 2 tbsp coconut in a heavy bottomed wide non stick pan over medium heat.
  4. Add the marinated chicken and cook covered for about 15 minutes, stirring once or twice in between, until the chicken oozes water.
  5. Now cook this uncovered until all the moisture evaporates. Add 2 tbsp coconut oil and roast the chicken until it turns brown and is completely cooked. It will take about 30 minutes.
  6. Chicken Coconut Ularthiyathu is ready. Serve it hot.
