  1. Toor Dal     1    cup
  2. Onion sliced    1    no.
  3. Lady's Finger     4    nos.
  4. Carrot -cut into 1 ½"length pieces    2    nos.
  5. Raw Banana -cut into 1 ½"length pieces    1    no.
  6. Drumsticks -cut into 1 ½"length pieces    2    nos.
  7. Tomatoes -cut into 8 pieces    2    nos.
  8. Brinjal -cut into 8 pieces    1    no.
  9. Bittergourd/Kakarakaya a small piece     1    piece
  10. Green Chillies sliced    2    nos.
  11. Tamarind (Lemon size)    1    nos.
  12. Chilli Powder     2    tsp
  13. Sambar Powder (available in market)     2    tbsp
  14. Asafoetida     ¼    tsp
  15. Oil     2    tbsp
  16. Mustard Seeds     1    tsp
  17. Dry Red Chillies     2    nos.
  18. Curry Leaves     2    stalks


  1. Cook toor dal,onion and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker,adding enough water
  2. When the dal is done,remove the lid and add tamarind juice and asafoetida.
  3. Add chilly powder,sambar powder and all vegetables.
  4. Add the salt and enough water,cook till they are done.
  5. Heat oil in a pan and allow mustard seeds to splutter.
  6. Add red chillies and curry leaves and fry for a minute.
  7. Add the seasoning to the sambar,mix well and serve hot.
