Araithuvuttu Rasam

Ingredients: 

  1. Tomato     1    no.
  2. Oil     2    tbsp
  3. Coriander Powder     1    tsp
  4. Red Gram (Thuvaram Parippu)     ½    cup
  5. Dry Red Chillies     2    nos.
  6. Pepper Powder     1    tsp
  7. Tomato -chopped    1    no.
  8. Grated Coconut     1    tbsp
  9. Tamarind     50    g
  10. Mustard Seeds     ½    tsp
  11. Curry Leaves     1    stalk

Description:
 

  1. Wash and cook chana dal in a pressure cooker with enough water.
  2. Heat 1/2 tbsp oil in a pan.Add coriander powder,dry red chillis and pepper powder and stir well.
  3. Add grated coconut and the cooked dal into the above mixture and stir for few minutes.Remove from heat and keep it aside to cool.
  4. Grind the above mixture to make a paste.(Sprinkle a little water if necessary)
  5. To make tamarind juice soak a lemon sized tamarind in 2 cups of hot water for 20 minutes.Then wash the tamarind in this water and rinse and drain the water for the extract.Tamarind juice is ready.
  6. Mix the tamarind juice,chopped tomato and the paste in a pan and boil it.
  7. Heat the remaining oil in a seperate pan and add the mustard seeds and the curry leaves.When the seeds starts crackling remove it from heat and add to the above mixture.
  8. Serve hot with steamed rice or as a soup.
