Vengaaya Sambar

  1. Red Gram (Thuvaram Parippu)     ½    cup
  2. Small Onion / Shallot -chopped    ¼    Kg
  3. Tamarind Pulp    2    tsp
  4. Asafoetida     ¼    tsp
  5. Sambar Powder (available in market)     2    tsp
  6. Mustard Seeds     ¼    tsp
  7. Urad Dal(Uzhunnuparippu)     1    tsp
  8. Fenugreek leaves     ¼    tsp
  9. Curry Leaves     1    stalk
  10. Coriander Leaves     2    stalk
  11. Oil     1    tbsp


  1. Cook the red gram in a pressure cooker till done.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and splutter the mustard seeds. Add black gram and stir until its brown. Now add the fenugreek seeds and fry until its brown in colour.
  3. Add chopped onions and stir for 30 seconds.
  4. Add sambar powder and a cup of water. Cover and cook over a medium flame for about 10 minutes.
  5. Add tamarind pulp, asafoetida, salt and curry leaves. Mix it well.
  6. Add the cooked gram. Remove from heat when sambar thickens slightly.
  7. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
  8. 'Vengaaya Sambar' is ready to serve with rice.
