  1. Tamarind Pulp    3    tbsp
  2. Mustard Seeds     ½    tsp
  3. Asafoetida     ½    tsp
  4. Ghee     2    tsp
    1. Split Bengal gram      2    tbsp
    2. Coriander Seeds (Malli)      2    tbsp
    3. Peppercorns      4    no.
    4. Curry Leaves      3    cups
    5. Oil      ½    tsp


  1. Heat oil in a pan and roast the ingredients in no:6(except the curry leaves) until gram is golden in colour.
  2. Add the curry leaves and stir well.
  3. Grind into a fine paste by adding little water.
  4. Heat ghee in a pan and splutter the mustard seeds.
  5. Add 1 cup of water, paste, tamarind pulp, asafoetida, and salt and simmer over a medium flame for 8 minutes, stirring it well.
  6. Remove from heat when the gravy thickens slightly.
  7. 'Kariveppilai Kuzhambu' is ready to serve.
